Edisto Island and Edisto Beach Recreation

Emphasis On Outdoor Recreation Fill The Days For Owners Of Edisto Island Real Estate

Edisto Beach State Park
Many days spent in the midst of nature begin at Edisto Beach State Park. Opened in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the 1,255-acre park includes a dense maritime forest and expansive salt marshes filled with the wonders of nature, as well as about one and a half miles of Edisto Island's beach. Edisto Beach State Park also offers a day-use area with beach access, four miles of nature trails that wind through the island’s maritime forest, and an interpretive center. Of course, water sports highlight the list of things to do – shrimping, sailing, surf-casting, deep-sea fishing and more are available. Edisto Beach State Park also features 103 campsites and a number of comfortable cabins.

Outdoors Utopia
Edisto Island real estate owners who are nature enthusiasts have easy access to the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto (ACE) Basin, a coastal wetlands wilderness that lies at the mouth of the Edisto River. The ACE Basin’s 350,000 acres of diverse natural habitats, forested wetlands, tidal marshes, barrier islands and beaches represent one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast. One of only 35 world-class conservation sites in the Nature Conservancy’s Last Great Places program, the area has been identified as one of the highest priority regions for protection under the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. The ACE Basin offers world-class camping, swimming, boating, hunting and wildlife watching, and the gently flowing black waters of the Edisto River attracts paddling enthusiasts of all skill levels from around the world.

Local Species
Edisto Island real estate owners looking to get acquainted with some of Edisto Island's reptilian wildlife might opt for a visit to the Edisto Island Serpentarium, which is dedicated to the recognition, preservation and the study of reptiles, both native to the region and from around the world. A variety of snakes, turtles, and alligators are among this unique facility’s inhabitants.

Edisto Island is also home to the Edisto Beach Marina which hosts the Edisto Marina Billfish Tournament each May as part of the S. C. Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series. The marina also offers boat tours and fishing trips, as well as canoe, kayak and motorboat rentals.

Golf
For the golfer, the Fairfield Resort’s Edisto Island Club designed by Tom Jackson is ranked one of the top 25 courses in South Carolina by Golf Illustrated magazine. Set among palms, palmettos, and oak groves, the golf course is laced with creeks and lagoons. Wildlife is abundant and the golf course has more than one resident alligator. Other nearby golf courses include the nine-hole private Dogwood Hills Country Club in Walterboro, and the Links at Stono Ferry located in Hollywood, S.C.
